Daring Mennonite Couple Get Married on Long Weekend

SASKATOON, SK

Laura Sawatzky, 22, and Nick Barkman, 23, tied the knot this long weekend to a completely empty church.

“Even our witnesses didn’t show up,” said Laura. “Apparently they would rather be at the cabin than witness our nuptials.”

Laura started to have concerns after not a single person RSVP’ed to the wedding once they found out it was on the August long weekend.

“I mean, at least we didn’t get married on a Friday afternoon,” said Laura, “although I guess the attendance would have been about the same.”

Not even Laura and Nick’s parents showed up.

“Dad was going fishing and Mom had some gardening to do,” said Laura. “Looks like there was  lot of rhubarb to pick or something.”

Laura and Nick say it’s not all bad that no one showed up as they were able to freeze all the food and will be eating wedding leftovers for the next year-and-a-half.
