LOS ANGELES, CA
Every single Mennonite on the planet will be cheering on Paraguay as they face off against the Americans in the World Cup opener this Friday evening.
“They’ll be cheering in Spanish. They’ll be cheering in Plautdietsch,” said Stephen Froese of Rosetown, “but whatever the language, not a single one of them will be cheering for the Americans.”
The support for Paraguay extends well beyond the Mennonite community, however.
“It’s the one thing that brings us Mennonites and Catholics together,” said David Friesen of Lomo Plata. “Cheering against the Americans.”
Even American Mennonites are having difficulty cheering for their own team.
“Yeah, you know, at the end of the day, we really don’t want to see that jackass in the White House with a smile on his face,” said Anne Yoder of Goshen. “So I guess, it’s go Paraguay go!”
The match will be broadcast live with Plautdietch commentary on Knackzoat radio at 6 pm.
