ZURICH, SWITZERLAND
David Yoder was excited to return to the land of his ancestors this week for the Anabaptism 500-year anniversary, but as soon as he arrived, he got the sneaking suspicion that things must have changed a little in the past five centuries.
“The Matterhorn? Well that’s always been there. Fondue? I’m sure my Yoder family has been doing that for ages,” explained Yoder. “But the prices? Hoscht du dei Daag des Lewes! I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Soon after arrival in Switzerland, Yoder had to be revived with smelling salts.
“40 dollars for a pizza? When my ancestors left this place, I doubt a pizza cost much more than a dollar or two,” said Yoder. “I guess that’s what happens when Mennonites leave a place – prices go way up!”
While the 500th anniversary was held in the most expensive country in the world, the 600th anniversary is already being scheduled for the cheapest place on Earth – Steinbach.
