BASEL, SWITZERLAND
A seventeenth century German hymn popular with Mennonites has won the 2025 Eurovision song contest.
“Normally, we only accept newly-written songs, but we figured this one had enough age on it that we could haul it out of the cellars,” said head judge Helmut Schmidt. “Besides, I think Nun Danket Alle Gott is a real banger.”
The winning hymn was an entry from the GC team, which broke off to form their own team this year after decades of competing under the wider Mennonite banner.
“The MBs wanted to sing a Brian Doerksen song,” said lead singer Agnes Kehler. “Either that or something by Hillsong.”
In the end the judges really liked the choir’s rendition of the old hymn.
“And we won’t tell them it was written by a Lutheran,” said Schmidt. “I don’t want to rain on their parade.”
The Mennonite choir will go on tour across Europe and North America this summer with a brief afternoon stop in the Chaco.
