A recent rash of copper wire thefts has left a huge shortage in the community of Winkler, which has thankfully been filled by a dedicated team of Mennonite volunteers.
“We’ve been stretching pennies into copper wire for years,” said Mr. Enns. “It’s nice to see our skills are finally appreciated by the community.”
The Mennonite copper wire has been used to replace stolen wire at electrical sites across the province.
“All you need is a couple pennies and some determination,” said Enns. “Our top penny stretcher Mr. Fehr can get 50 feet of copper wire from a single penny.”
Enns says he’s optimistic about the penny stretching industry, but admits it’s been hard to keep up with the demand.
“So, we’ll be rolling some pennies down Main Street every day this week in hope that our fellow Mennonites will give us a hand,” said Enns. “Mennonites are best known for three things – farming, draining swamps, and stretching pennies.”
Anyone interesting in learning how to stretch a penny is encouraged to stop by the local EMMMBC church basement this Saturday afternoon for a hands-on penny-stretching workshop.
