It seems that the Mennonite ban on attending movie theatres is over, as thousands of Mennos flocked to local cinemas this weekend to see either the new Barbie movie or the long-awaited docudrama on famed canola farmer Art B. Reimer.
“I’m pulling a double header and seeing both,” said Tina Wiebe of Hague, Saskatchewan. “I mean, who can choose between Margot Robbie and old Mr. Reimer from over in Schanzenfeld?”
What is most striking about the phenomenon is how different the two films are.
“You’ve either got 90 minutes of pink tank tops and Ken dolls or 2.5 hours of watching an old Mennonite man fix his combine,” said Wiebe. “This whole Barbenreimer thing is really dividing the community.”
Wiebe hesitated to predict which film will come out at the top of the box office, but suspects it’ll all come down to which film gets the pastor’s endorsement in his sermon this Sunday.
“He’s an influential man,” said Wiebe. “Mennonites sure have changed their tune about movie-going.”
The Hague Movie Theatre is expected to play both films until they either run out of knackzoat or manage to get a copy of Sound of Freedom.
