Soft pop rock singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has dropped a Mennonite choir from his North American tour after finding out they were pacifists.
“I don’t like to get political,” said Sheeran, “but when I heard a bunch of nonresistant pacifists were going to be joining me on stage, I had to get rid of them.”
The Mennonite choir had been scheduled to travel via horse and buggy across the continent while praying for peace and singing backup on ‘Afterglow.’
“And, you know, that’s just too political for my liking,” said Sheeran. “I really like to avoid controversy, so might as well exclude a group with an unbroken commitment to nonviolence for the past 500 years.”
Mennonite scholars were quick to point out that Sheeran, evidently, knew very little about Mennonites, but were nonetheless happy the choir had been dropped.
“I’m not sure what’s the greater sin. Ed Sheeran singing with pacifists? Or Mennonites singing with Ed Sheeran?”
