A brand new volume edited by scholar Rob Zacharias will take its place on library shelves alongside Martyrs Mirror, The Complete Writing of Menno Simons and Royden Loewen’s Blumenort book as the longest books ever written about Mennonites.
“The guy from Friesens dropped them off this afternoon with a forklift,” said Zacharias, editor of In Search of a Mennonite Imagination: Key Texts in Mennonite Literary Criticism. “And that was just half-a-dozen copies of the book. Any more than that and we would have required a crane.”
Zacharias says it’s only appropriate that this work would be as lengthy as those other tomes.
“After all, the essays in the collection contain a poignant mix of the earnestness of Menno Simons with the tragedy of Martyrs Mirror,” said Zacharias. “And we’re twice as long as that. It feels nice to have the record.”
The book has already become a bestseller.
“We hear churches are really getting on board,” said Zacharias. “It’s especially popular with youth groups, apparently.”
Rumour has it that youth leaders are not so concerned with the content of the book, but the fact its tremendous girth can be used as a measuring tool to keep the boys and girls farther apart.
