When Jake Penner passed away in 2008, his wife Martha promptly had her own name added to the headstone in anticipation of her eventual demise.
“But it’s been 17 years and I’m still kicking,” said Mrs. Penner. “It says right there on the headstone Martha Penner 1943 – present. We’re all just waiting to fill in the blanks.”
The Penner family felt it would be more economical to add her name back then, so that all they had to do was add the death year whenever that might occur.
“Not everyone gets to visit their own grave,” said Mrs. Penner. “But every time I go and pay my respects to Jake, I’m reminded that I’ll soon be next.”
Rumour has it this was all just Jake’s idea to deter Martha from remarrying with that old bachelor Kornelsen.
