Raisin Buns at Church Lunch Seen as ‘Really Bad Omen’

KLEEFELD, MB

As the Kleefeld MBCC church gathered for their spring lunch this week, many Mennonites felt a little uneasy as each table had a basket of raisin buns.

“What are they trying to tell us? Raisins buns? That’s a bad sign,” said Mrs. Loeppky. “Which one of his gonna go next?”

Raisins buns are normally reserved exclusively for funerals, so their presence at the church luncheon really gave everyone the creeps.

“I ain’t touching those things,” said Mrs. Harms. “I don’t want to be the one to kick the bucket.”

Unaware of the bad omen, Mr. Johnson, who is new to the community, dove right in and buttered himself up a delicious raisin bun.

“I don’t know why all these Mennos are so gun-shy,” said Johnson. “These things are delicious!”

As of press time, Mr. Johnson is still with us, though his church community has gathered in prayer in hopes of keeping him alive.
