HOLLYWOOD, CA
With the release of Rogue One today, millions of Star Wars fans, including Mennonites, have lined up outside theatres around the world in anticipation of the new movie. The Daily Bonnet asked a few Mennonites to share their thoughts.
- “I’m certainly no advocate of war and violence, but if it’s happening in deep space somewhere I guess it must be okay.” – Melanie Hoeppner, 25, Anaheim
- “I’m not sure what this ‘Star Wars’ thing is, but last year my sister Martha and I fought like cats and dogs over the proper Chicken Noodle Soup recipe. It was the ‘Star Anise Wars.'” – Belinda Froese, 71, Altona
- “We’re not here to watch the movie, but to hand out tracts reminding people to ‘beat their light sabres into plowshares.'” – Sarah Warkentin, 22, Lancaster
- “As a longtime Mennonite pastor, I’ve dedicated my entire life to ensure that our people live ‘a long time ago in a galaxy far far away.'” – Rev. Dick Penner, 85, St. Catharines
- “Whenever we go out in public people are staring at us for our unusual dress. When a new Star Wars movie comes out, it’s finally our chance to stand outside the theatre and laugh at all the geeks dressed like Yoda or Obi-Wan Kenobi.” – Peter Yoder, 19, Goshen
