SCHANTZENFELD, SK
The Priebes of Swift Current, Saskatchewan were shocked to discover that a prominent highway between their city and the tiny darp of Schantzenfeld, was actually nothing more than a gravel road. This discovery was made after the Priebes ventured outside the big city for the first time in decades.
“Figured it was time to visit the old farm house,” said Judy. “Diewel, if I’d known we’d be travelling by gravel, I would have taken the F-150 instead of the Civic.”
The Priebes ventured south of Swift Current on “Highway” 625, then turned left on “Highway” 721 before reaching Schantzenfeld.
“I never knew our fair province had such a liberal definition of “highway,”” said Priebe. “Must have been sometime when the NDP were in charge.”
The Priebes enjoyed their time on the farm, but figured they’d try a different route on the way back.
“So we stuck to provincial highway 343 before returning to Swift on the 630,” said Stan. “Judy suggested we try Highway 4, but I wasn’t going to risk it.”
The Priebes plan to vacation in Manitoba next summer, where they intend to dodge potholes and chunks of asphalt on that province’s most prominent “highways.”
