In what just may be the most Steinbach headline in history, Judy Peters reports from Steinbach City Hall on Reimer Avenue this week that mayor Earl Funk and former city councillor Cari Penner have officially endorsed Susan Penner in her bid to take over Kelvin Goertzen’s job as MLA.
“Looks like Funk and Penner support Penner to succeed Goertzen,” said Peters from Reimer. “If successful, Penner will follow Goertzen, another Penner, and a Driedger as our city’s representative.”
At the federal level, explains Peters, there’s also been an Epp, Toews, and Falk, as well as a Reimer, Friesen, a different Goertzen, and a couple Barkmans as mayor.
“But sticking to MLAs, before Goertzen, Driedger and Penner there was Pankratz, Banman, and Barkman,” says Peters. “So with Penner and Funk’s support, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if Penner becomes the next Goertzen.”
So far, Penner is just the second person in the race after someone named Zwaagstra.
