With echoes of the 97th Grey Cup, the Saskatchewan Roughriders saw their comeback against Winnipeg in the Banjo Bowl stymied after an inopportune ‘Too Many Mennonites’ call.
“Too many Mennonites. Saskatchewan,” said head referee Andre Proulx. “You’ve got two Wiebes on the roster and countless Letkemans in the stands.”
One of the Mennonites had rushed to try to get off the field before the ball was snapped, but it was too late.
“I guess we learned our lesson the hard way,” said head coach Corey Mace. “Always count your Mennonites.”
Rider fans were quick to dismiss the penalty as bias.
“Those officials are always out to get us! Too many Mennonites?” said Riders superfan Kyle Letkeman. “Come on. The Bombers have a Neufeld, too, and I don’t see them getting any penalties for it.”
Traditionalists say the CFL should keep the rule on the books, although the commissioner says this may be the last year such penalties are called, saying “you can never have too many Mennonites.”
