Plane Takes Couple to La Crete, Alberta Instead of Greek Island

LA CRETE, AB

The Wiebes of Winkler were planning for a nice warm beach vacation this winter and wound up in La Crete, Alberta instead.

“There are plenty of reasons to visit La Crete,” said Mr. Wiebe, “but a warm tropical Greek island vacation is not one of them.”

Instead of Ancient Greek ruins and beaches, the Wiebes checked out the banks of the Peace River and the historic Mennonite Heritage Museum.

“We ate a lot fewer gyros than we were anticipating,” said Mr. Wiebe. “But who can complain about vereniki and schmaunt fat?”

The Wiebes had only packed swimwear and towels, but thankfully the locals were able to help.

“We got everything we need – nice warm coffee, longjohns, even a ring of farmer sausage,” said Mrs. Wiebe. “Plus everyone spoke Plautdietsch, which, let my tell you, is a lot easier to understand than Greek.”

The Wiebes say they enjoyed their time in northern Alberta and are particularly excited about all the money they saved by using so little sunscreen.
