NIVERVILLE, MB
For more than a century, residents of the small Mennonite town of Niverville have been completely cut off from access to McDonald’s restaurants.
“Oh, sure, some brave souls ventured out to Winnipeg once in a while,” said Mrs. Bergen. “Some might have even trekked over to Steinbach. But those were truly difficult times. I don’t really like to talk about.”
The journey of Nivervillians to obtain McDonald’s has been written about in Mennonite history books and has often been considered one of the great travesties in the long sad story of our people.
“Our quarter pounders were always cold by the time we got back to Niverville,” said Mrs. Bergen. “But now that’s all over. Jauma, if only William Hespeler could see us now.”
A commemorative plaque has already been placed at the McDonald’s, right on the very spot where Mr. Penner bought the first McNugget.
